Tiny Paintings at McKinney Arts

The New York Times recently had a story about “tiny paintings,” saying that they were “the art world’s next big thing.” If tiny paintings are a trend now, then I guess I’ve been trendy for a long time, as I’ve been making small works of art for years. I’ve always liked how a small art work tends to bring me in close in order to focus on the small details at a small scale. It’s like a small painting pulls you in, where a large painting can be seen with a glance from a distance.

Part of my trend of making small art works also comes from the simple point of necessity – when I lived in New York City for ten years, in a series of tiny apartments, I didn’t have the space to make big art. Tiny paintings in tiny apartments seemed to be a logical approach. Even now that I have more space out in the suburbs, I have well over 1,000 art works, so I’m glad that a lot of them are small, so that I’m not paying for storage space.
