I saw this Poisonous Dart Frog at the Jenkinson’s Aquarium at Point Pleasant Beach in New Jersey, and was struck by the beauty of the bright colors and patterns on its body. I think I could get some ideas from these patterns for a painting, it’s certainly a striking look.
They’re not just good-looking for the sake of having a funky style, but rather the look of this skin serves a purpose of warning other animals. Poison dart frogs are known to be among the most poisonous amphibians in the world, but they don’t use this danger as a means of attack. Instead, it acts as a deterrent, with their brightly-colored bodies basically telling would-be threats that “Hey, I’m poisonous, so don’t eat me.”
Here’s another look … not sure why this guy was positioned this way, but he just stayed there like this the whole time I was looking at him.
