Part of my inspiration for going to Mexico City – and staying in the CDMX, as opposed to spending any time at a resort or on the beach – was that I had heard that Mexico City has become an international destination for art, between the museums, contemporary art galleries, and the street art.
As I landed in Mexico City and was making my way through the airport, I had planned on taking a bus to take me into the historic center of the city, where I had an Airbnb reservation. The picture above was the first street art mural that I saw on this initial bus trip, and my thought was: if this is what I can expect from the street art, I’m going to see some great art!
I didn’t notice this while I was on the bus, but take a second look at the picture above. The two figures grab your attention first, but look at the fence: someone painted a sunflower on it, which seems to flow as an image even though the artist had these gaps between each pole. How does one paint a full image on a series of poles? Pretty impressive … I’ve masked out the background in the image below so that you can better see what I’m talking about.

While the artist’s name is not visible in the images above, this next one that I saw from the bus while heading into the historic center of Mexico City is a mural by @funny_graff, who, from what I can gather, is in fact Rocio Martinez, a local artist who does murals, graffiti, design, and more. I’m not finding a website, but you can see her Facebook page here, if you’d like to see more.

Here’s one more that I saw from the initial bus ride … there’s more to the mural than what I captured in this photo, but I have to admit it wasn’t always easy to shoot pictures from a moving bus while also trying to keep a sense of where I was in a new foreign city trying to find my way to my destination!
