I was doing some holiday shopping recently when I found myself walking past a “Five Below” store – I can’t say it’s ever been a place that I have shopped, but I understood it to be a discount store and I decided to go in to see what kind of stuff they had. I was surprised to find some art supplies (surprised, perhaps, because everything in Five Below is supposed to be $5 or less), and was intrigued by this round “Paint Your Own Disco Canvas.”<\/p>\n

In most art supply stores, a round canvas typically costs more than a rectangular one, presumably because it’s harder to stretch and staple a round canvas. So for the minor price of $5, I decided to pick this one up, despite the fact that it is a “paint your own” product where they dictate what the image will be. But then again, what’s not to like about an image of a disco ball? And considering I’ve long been a fan of the art of Victor Vasarely<\/a>, might I be able to use this as a starting point for my own Vasarely-inspired creation?<\/p>\n

I’m a little leery of using the “paint pots” that came with this pre-packaged canvas … when you consider the cost of a wooden stretcher, canvas, paint, and brush, all for $5, it’s probably the cheapest and crappiest paint one could get, I assume it’s acrylic but it’s not even labeled. I’ll probably ditch the paints, and will not be following the color pattern as depicted on the packaging, but this could be fun to see what I can come up with. Stay tuned …<\/p>\n
