{"id":1482,"date":"2023-10-27T03:24:58","date_gmt":"2023-10-27T03:24:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/manzodakota.com\/?p=307"},"modified":"2026-06-26T17:34:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T17:34:23","slug":"growing-brains-a-collection-of-lithops-living-stones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mckinneyarts.com\/blog\/growing-brains-a-collection-of-lithops-living-stones\/","title":{"rendered":"Growing brains: a collection of Lithops, Living Stones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was in NYC last weekend and was walking around the West Village, when I happened upon <a href=\"https:\/\/theoldyew.com\/\" title=\"The Old Yew Plant Shop\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">The Old Yew Plant Shop<\/a> on Horatio Street at 8th Avenue. They had a lot of cool plants, unusual varieties, but then I noticed what looked like a collection of little brains, and I was intrigued &#8211; I&#8217;d never seen anything like these before.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see in the sign below, they&#8217;re called &#8220;Lithops, Living Stones,&#8221; and they&#8217;re a type of succulent. I was curious to learn more, and what I found out was that the name &#8220;Lithops&#8221; comes from the Greek words &#8220;lithos,&#8221; which means &#8220;stone,&#8221; and &#8220;ops&#8221; which means &#8220;face.&#8221; They are originally native to southern Africa, and are often referred to as pebble plants or &#8220;living stones.&#8221; Personally, I think they look more like little brains rather than stones, but I still think they&#8217;re pretty cool.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_309\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-309\" style=\"width: 940px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mckinneyarts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Lithops-Living-Stone-Succulent.jpg\" alt=\"A collection of Lithops Living Stones, as seen at The Old Yew Plant Store in NYC.\" width=\"950\" height=\"941\" class=\"size-full wp-image-309\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-309\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A collection of Lithops Living Stones, as seen at The Old Yew Plant Store in NYC.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;ve had bad luck with keeping plants alive for very long, despite having good southern daylight exposure and watering on a regular basis, but succulents seem to last longer than other plants in my home. I didn&#8217;t buy any on the actual day I was in The Old Yew, but that&#8217;s because I had a full day of wandering NYC ahead of me, but seeing how there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/images.app.goo.gl\/V5gei79nQbjcoiyLA\" title=\"Lithops Living Stone succulents\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">so many different styles and looks<\/a> for this funky plant, I think I want to get some!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was in NYC last weekend and was walking around the West Village, when I happened upon The Old Yew Plant Shop on Horatio Street at 8th Avenue.
