{"id":1825,"date":"2025-01-22T23:33:11","date_gmt":"2025-01-22T23:33:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mckinneyarts.com\/blog\/?p=1825"},"modified":"2026-06-11T14:19:36","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T14:19:36","slug":"first-impressions-of-street-art-in-mexico-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mckinneyarts.com\/blog\/first-impressions-of-street-art-in-mexico-city\/","title":{"rendered":"First impressions of street art in Mexico City"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Part of my inspiration for going to Mexico City &#8211; and staying in the CDMX, as opposed to spending any time at a resort or on the beach &#8211; was that I had heard that Mexico City has become an international destination for art, between the museums, contemporary art galleries, and the street art.<\/p>\n<p>As I landed in Mexico City and was making my way through the airport, I had planned on taking a bus to take me into the historic center of the city, where I had an Airbnb reservation. The picture above was the first street art mural that I saw on this initial bus trip, and my thought was: if this is what I can expect from the street art, I&#8217;m going to see some great art!<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t notice this while I was on the bus, but take a second look at the picture above. The two figures grab your attention first, but look at the fence: someone painted a sunflower on it, which seems to flow as an image even though the artist had these gaps between each pole. How does one paint a full image on a series of poles? Pretty impressive &#8230; I&#8217;ve masked out the background in the image below so that you can better see what I&#8217;m talking about.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1827\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1827\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mckinneyarts.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/CDMX-sunflower-painted-on-fence.jpg\" alt=\"CDMX sunflower painted on a fence\" width=\"850\" height=\"649\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1827\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">See how the sunflower image carries over from pole to pole in this fence?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the artist&#8217;s name is not visible in the images above, this next one that I saw from the bus while heading into the historic center of Mexico City is a mural by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/funny_graff\/\" title=\"Instagram account for Funny Graff CDMX\" rel=\"noopener nofollow \" target=\"_blank\">@funny_graff<\/a>, who, from what I can gather, is in fact Rocio Martinez, a local artist who does murals, graffiti, design, and more.
