Press Release

December, 1996: McKinney Arts is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of paintings by Julia D'Amario. The gallery is located at 526 East 11th Street in the East Village.

"The Issue of Irreversibility" is the title given to a series of mixed media paintings that Julia D'Amario has been working on for the past five years. This series has reached over fifty panels, of which fifteen will be displayed at the gallery. Each 16 x 12 inch painting on canvas mounted to wood becomes a potential grave marker for a specific animal on the Endangered Species List. The paintings depict the animal within an abstracted rendering of its environment, and at times this includes a reference to its geographic location. The animated energy of the paintings show us of the vitality of these animals, while the gravestone format forewarns a fate that can hopefully be spared.

Also to be exhibited is a six panel canvas titled "Nitrous Oxide vs. Ozone: Deforestation," which shows the progression of toxic effects on the air and the soil. The imagery is abstacted from what might be considered a cross-section of the earth, with subtle changes in each panel showing the slow, and often difficult to perceive, damage to our world.

Julia D'Amario's exhibition history includes shows at the Waterloo Foundation for the Arts, Waterloo, NJ; the Noyes Museum, Oceanville, NJ; Ceres Gallery, New York; Marymount College, New York; and the Atwood Gallery, Wooster, MA.
