Press Release
January, 1997: McKinney Arts is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of paintings by Kevin Melchionne. The gallery is located at 526 East 11th Street in the East Village.
Kevin Melchionne's lnadscapes feature naturalistic, pictorial space which is altered by the presence of brightly colored stripes and decorative elements. The rolling hills are painted with a realistic sense of perspective, and have a light source which creates shadows leading the viewer into the depths of these surreal spaces. Fences, walls, banners, flags and other architectural elements break the space of each painting into smaller zones, inviting the viewer to explore each curve and field within the landscape. The festive colors and decorative motifs belie the sense of depth and reality to create an environment that invites exploration, confusion, and wonder.
This exhibition will be Mr. Melchionne's first one-person show in New York.
* The quality of these images is based on the fact that the originals were 20 year-old 35mm slides which were scanned in order to reproduce them here. Believe it or not, 35mm slides were the typical format and art world standard for photographing art in the 1990s!
