Press Release
November, 1996: McKinney Arts is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of photographs by Peter Carey. The gallery is located at 526 East 11th Street in the East Village.
Peter Carey's large-scale color photographs feature surrealist assemblages consisting of food, metal, and plastic. These disparate items are transformed into new organisms, built to function in a separate and distinct reality. The act of photographing these entities creates a colorful record of their life, providing evidence of their existence. Mr. Carey refers to this body of work as "The Hybrid Series," which reflects the merging of materials as well as the combination of sculptural and photographic media.
Peter Carey's exhibition history includes shows at The Edge of the Looking Glass Gallery in Chicago; The Photo Center of Kiev, in the Ukraine; and the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, Michigan. This will be Mr. Carey's first one-person exhibition in New York City.
* The quality of these images is based on the fact that the originals were 20 year-old 35mm slides which were scanned in order to reproduce them here. Believe it or not, 35mm slides were the typical format and art world standard for photographing art in the 1990s!
Works from the exhibition (all images are © Peter Carey). See more of Peter Carey's work at geneticdisposition.com.
