Press Release
September, 1996: McKinney Arts is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of paintings by Sally Lindsay. The gallery is located at 526 East 11th Street in the East Village.
Lindsay's paintings are borne out of everyday experiences in New York City. Incidents and scenarios are witnessed and then mentally recorded, to be replayed directly on the surface of the painting. Lindsay works without the use of sketches or photographs, and therefore her paintings maintain an element of freshness which holds the energy of the original occurrence.
However, these works are not the simple recordings of street life. Rather, Lindsay paints her figures in a way that suggests childlike naivety, which is then countered by overall elements of sophisticated abstraction, resulting in a unique way of seeing city life.
Lindsay's exhibition history includes one person shows at the Seltzer Gallery, New York; Fels Point Gallery, Baltimore; Eyes Gallery, Philadelphia; Hansen Gallery, New York; and the Mellon Art Gallery, Pittsburgh. Selected group shows include Cork Gallery, New York; Hansen Gallery, New York; and the Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore.
