Press Release
MCKINNEY ARTS is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition titled "The Affected Landscape," featuring six photographers: Marina Berio, John Foster, Emmet Gowin, Lisa Kereszi, Mark Klett, and Neil Runyon. The gallery is located at 526 East 11th Street in the East Village.
"The Affected Landscape" puts forth six different viewpoints on how the natural world has been altered or transformed in the development of our modern day civilization. The six artists represented here each work in a distinctly unique style, but the common denominator of black and white imagery allows the viewer to see how each photographer handles the subject of landscape in their work.
The concept of "affected" is approached on several different levels: Emmet Gowin shows us beauty in the dangerous setting of a toxic water treatment facility, while Lisa Kereszi depicts an abstract wall-like structure, which upon closer inspection reveals layers of garbage. Neil Runyon personifies man's structures, with telephone poles that seem to dance in place and electrical towers that appear to be walking across the landscape. Mark Klett creates an image of mark-making not unlike a Brice Mardin drawing, but in reality these marks are dirt bike paths in the desert hills. Marina Berio's soft-focus image may appear to be genetic material, but New Yorkers will recognize the roller coaster at Coney Island. John Foster's pictures were taken while riding trains, which criss-cross our landscape and bring with them new developments to previously remote regions.
