Shelving ideas for displaying art

On a trip up to Cooperstown in the summer of 2023, I had a stop in the town of Franklin, NY, which has stuck in my mind ever since. There is a charming Main Street that is only a few blocks long, and I had lunch and then wandered in and out of the various stores. As I entered LAVA Atelier, my attention was pulled to this wall of shelves and art works. I’ve certainly seen art displayed on shelves in art galleries numerous times over the years, but there was something about this installation – two shelves with another row of art works leaned against the wall on the floor, with bold crown molding overhead – that really grabbed my attention. I love this look, as it’s a beautiful display and allows for works of multiple sizes to be displayed, covering pretty much the whole wall.

I’ve kept this art installation and shelving concept in mind and would like to implement it at some point myself … I have more art work than wall space in my home, and I do like to rotate the art I have on view, so to have shelves where one can swap art in and out without having to spackle nail holes in the wall all the time, this would be great. As I’ve considered gallery spaces over the past few years, I’ve decided that if I were to have a gallery space again, I would definitely use this idea. Either way – at home, or in a gallery space, I will take this inspiration and use it at some point.
