Pizza and basketball still life above John Doughs

I was wandering around Tralee after dinner on my recent trip to Ireland, when I noticed this big pizza slice hanging outside a second story window. As you can see from the sign, it’s a restaurant named “John Doughs,” and when I look up the website, I wonder if this is the backside of the building, as the signage at the entrance looks totally different from this. I should add that I didn’t go in, I just had my attention captured by a large pizza slice suspended in the air (I love pizza).

But if you look closely at the window to the right of the pizza slice above, you’ll see something else. This is what really captured my attention: it’s almost like the window frames some sort of basketball still life. As you can see below, there are 5 basketballs with a fluorescent light bulb sticking up between them. It’s almost like a mash-up of a Jeff Koons piece with a Dan Flavin light sculpture.

Maybe this window opens into a room that has nothing to do with the John Doughs restaurant, I just found it amusing that two of my favorite things – basketball and pizza – were captured right next to each other in a somewhat surrealist manner.
